“Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love.”
St. John Paul 11, Dominicae cenae, no. 3
About the Sacrament of Holy Communion
The Sacrament of Holy Communion, or the Eucharist, is at the very center of our Catholic faith. At St. Celine Church, we believe that in the Eucharist, Jesus Christ is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—and that receiving Him in Holy Communion unites us more deeply with God and with our Church community. Each time we receive the Eucharist, we are nourished spiritually and strengthened to live as faithful disciples of Christ
First Holy Communion Preparation
Preparing for First Holy Communion is a sacred and joyful time in the life of a child and their family. At St. Celine Church, children typically begin preparation in second grade, either through our parish religious education program or a Catholic school. Our preparation process is designed to help children grow in their understanding of the Mass, the importance of the Eucharist, and how to receive the sacrament with reverence and love.
Children learn about the Last Supper, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the parts of the Mass, and how the Eucharist strengthens their relationship with God and others. The preparation also includes the celebration of First Reconciliation (Confession), helping children experience God’s mercy before receiving Holy Communion for the first time.
Family Involvement
Parents are the primary teachers of the faith, and we are committed to walking alongside families during this special journey. We offer parent meetings, family events, and resources to support faith formation at home. Families are encouraged to attend Sunday Mass regularly, pray together, and talk with their children about the beauty and meaning of the Eucharist.
The First Communion Mass is a highlight of the year and a powerful moment of grace for the entire family. It’s more than a ceremony—it’s a spiritual milestone that continues throughout the life of the child as they grow in faith and participation in the Church.
Family Involvement in First Communion Preparation
- Attend Sunday Mass regularly
Weekly participation in the Mass is essential, as it helps children become familiar with the liturgy and understand the importance of the Eucharist in our faith. - Support your child’s religious education
Ensure your child attends all classes and sessions, whether through the parish religious education program or Catholic school. - Participate in parent meetings and workshops
These sessions provide important information, spiritual reflection, and practical tools to help parents support their child’s faith journey. - Review lessons and pray at home
Reinforce what your child is learning by discussing class topics, practicing prayers, and sharing your own faith experiences. - Help your child prepare for First Reconciliation
Guide them through the examination of conscience, practice the Act of Contrition, and talk about God’s mercy and forgiveness. - Attend the First Communion retreat or rehearsal (if applicable)
These events help children understand the sacredness of the sacrament and prepare them for the celebration. - Model a life of faith and prayer
Children learn by example—your own love for the Eucharist and prayer life teaches more than words ever could. - Celebrate the sacrament as a family
Mark the occasion with reverence and joy. Encourage your child to continue receiving Communion regularly and to grow in their relationship with Jesus.
