About Baptisms

Baptism is the first and foundational sacrament in the life of a Christian. It is through Baptism that we are spiritually reborn, washed clean of original sin, and welcomed into the family of God—the Church. As Catholics, we believe that Baptism is not just a symbolic ritual, but a true sacrament, instituted by Christ, that leaves a permanent spiritual mark on the soul of the baptized person.

Why Baptism Is Important

Jesus Himself was baptized and commanded His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Through Baptism, we are united with Christ, share in His death and resurrection, and begin our journey as disciples in the life of grace.

For infants and young children, Baptism is a celebration not only for the child but for the entire Church community. Parents and godparents commit to raising the child in the Catholic faith, teaching them by word and example how to grow in love of God and neighbor. As the child grows, the seeds of faith planted in Baptism are nurtured through the other sacraments, prayer, religious education, and active participation in parish life.

Who Can Be Baptized?

Anyone who has not yet been baptized can receive this sacrament. While most baptisms at St. Alphonsus are for infants and young children, we also welcome older children, teens, and adults through special preparation programs such as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) or RCIC for children.

Godparent Information

Godparents play a vital role in the spiritual life of a child being baptized. Chosen for their faith and commitment to the Church, godparents serve as role models and spiritual guides, supporting the child’s parents in raising their child in the Catholic faith.

At least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic who has received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and is living a life consistent with the teachings of the Church. Godparents must also be at least 16 years old. A second godparent is optional and may be of the opposite sex; if not Catholic, this person may serve as a Christian witness, provided they are baptized and active in a Christian denomination.

Godparents will be asked to provide documentation, such as a letter of eligibility from their parish, confirming they meet these requirements.

Choosing a godparent is a meaningful decision. We encourage parents to take time to prayerfully consider who will walk with their child on their journey of faith. If you have questions about selecting a godparent or about the requirements, please contact the parish office. We’re here to help!
